AVONLEA COMMUNITY FARMS PROJECT
Introduction:
This new fundraising project combines the two best characteristics of our community: agriculture and generosity! The premise of this project involves the donation of the use of farm land by some of our area farmers with the input costs of growing the crop being covered by cash or product donations from the community and surrounding area.
With this type of cooperative effort, money from the marketed crop is pure profit and will go directly towards the new Avonlea Hall. Currently, we have 3 fields that have been donated to the cause for the 2014 crop year. Thank you to James Goby & Karen Bedford, the Watson Family, and Joel & Dave Miller for contributing the use of their land, and for generously donating their machinery and their time to farm these fields. Each of these field projects will have their own varied input costs as different crops will be grown on each of these donated fields.
Each input cost (fuel, seed & seedtreatment, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, fertilizer, trucking, storage costs) will require a sponsor. The local chemical reps, Avonlea Ag businesses, and area grain companies have been approached to assist with some of these input costs but an appeal to the general public is also essential to ensure that all the costs are covered.
